You are not tidying their house. You are choosing the part of it that already looks like a portrait.
Every home I walk into has a corner that is already a portrait. Sometimes it is the obvious one, the big window in the front room. More often it is a hallway with a skylight, the end of a kitchen table, the landing where the afternoon comes through the bathroom door.
My job in the first ten seconds is to find it, and my job for the next ninety minutes is to keep the person inside it while they forget I am there.
Clients apologise for their houses. I have never once photographed a whole house. I photograph three square metres of it, and those three square metres are always there.
Natural-light portrait photographer. I photograph people in their own rooms, gardens and doorways, and I teach the way I work: no flash, no studio, just reading the light that is already there.
