Why I stopped carrying a flash
It was not a philosophy. I left it at home once and the pictures were better.
I would like to say I stopped using flash for artistic reasons. The truth is I left the bag in the car one wet afternoon in a client’s kitchen, and the pictures I took with the window were the first ones from that year I actually liked.
Flash makes every room look like the same room. Window light makes every room look like itself, which is what the person who lives there wants to remember.
I still own a flash. It is in a drawer. It is very well rested.
Natural-light portrait photographer. I photograph people in their own rooms, gardens and doorways, and I teach the way I work: no flash, no studio, just reading the light that is already there.
