Hard sun through a small window is the most common problem in home portrait sessions and the one people spend the most money trying to solve. The answer is a white bedsheet and two clips.
Hang it over the window and the small hard source becomes a big soft one. The room goes quiet. Skin looks like skin. The client thinks you have lost your mind for about three minutes, right up until they see the back of the camera.
I now carry a sheet in the car. It has replaced the flash in the drawer as the most useful thing I own.
Natural-light portrait photographer. I photograph people in their own rooms, gardens and doorways, and I teach the way I work: no flash, no studio, just reading the light that is already there.
